One-Way Bus from Kanazawa to Takayama with a Stop in Shirakawa-go
In the village: 80 min
The village sits on the road between the two cities. Cross with your bags on a bus, finish a guided day in the other city or take a car for your group.
The short answer
The LIMON Tours bus is the simplest way from Kanazawa to Takayama via Shirakawa-go: it leaves at 13:50, stops 80 minutes in the village by its itinerary and reaches Takayama around 17:40 with your luggage on board, and the same line runs the other way. With a guide, the Machinovate days from either city and the Rataliya Tours van from Kanazawa can end in the other city; a private transfer runs from Takayama to Kanazawa for your group alone.
Pick the day you want to see the village, or the first and last day you are in Kanazawa, Takayama or Nagoya. We check the booking calendar of each Shirakawa-go tour and list the ones with places left.

LIMON Tours runs a one-way bus from the West Gate bus terminal of Kanazawa Station. You meet at 13:40, the bus leaves at 13:50, and your luggage stays on board while you walk through Shirakawa-go on your own. The itinerary gives 80 minutes in the village; the description says about 90, and reviewers describe anything from 60 to 105 minutes. Arrival in Takayama is around 17:40. There is no guide. From Takayama the same line runs to Kanazawa; its departure time and stop length were not on the page we read, so check them when you book. Coming from further away, a longer LIMON line runs from Kyoto Station to Takayama with a short stop in Kanazawa and about an hour and a half in the village (Shirakawa-go from Kyoto or Osaka).
Several day tours offer a different ending. From Kanazawa, the Machinovate day with Inami and Ainokura can drop you in Takayama around 18:00 to 18:30, and the Rataliya Tours van with about 180 minutes in the village can end in Takayama too. From Takayama, both Machinovate days can finish in Kanazawa; the Gokayama day arrives around 18:40. None of these listings says how much luggage fits, and a Rataliya reviewer found little room in the van, so ask the operator before you bring full-size cases.
If you travel on the scheduled bus instead and plan to leave bags at the Shirakawa-go bus terminal, arrive early: travellers report that the lockers there fill up. On the LIMON bus the question does not arise.
The private transfer from Takayama to Kanazawa takes about five hours with a stop in Shirakawa-go, your luggage in the car. The price is for the vehicle. The listing does not name the operator, the group size or the length of the stop, so ask for those before you book.
Going from Kanazawa to Takayama on the afternoon bus leaves you the morning in Kanazawa and puts you in Takayama for the evening. The Takayama morning markets then open the next day at 07:00 or 08:00 and close at 12:00. Going the other way with a guided day from Takayama gives you Takayama in the morning and Kanazawa by the evening. More on the start cities: from Kanazawa, from Takayama.
On a fixed bus line the timetable decides your stop. One traveller had a late bus, only an hour in the village and no refund; another found most windows covered with logo stickers and an extra stop on the second leg. When the bus runs on time, reviewers found the stop long enough for the main lanes, though not for the walk up to the viewpoint.
“the pick up at the bus station is simple to locate and we had 1 hour and 45 minutes to walk the town which for us with a toddler was just enough to see most of what's important. Not enough for the scenic walk though.”
“The trip was exactly as described, the bus was comfortable and everything went exactly to schedule. We had 2 hours in Shirakawa-go which was the perfect amount of time to see everything. This is a great option for anyone travelling from Takayama to Kanazawa!”
“The bus arrived 50 minutes late and we only had 1 hour to visit Shirakawago, when it was expected to be around 1h40min. We didn't have any kind of refund.”
“Pros: convenience, polite driver, sufficient time at the village stop. Cons: almost all windows of the bus are covered with company logo stickers, so not possible to see anything, unnecessary 20min stop on the second part of the trip.”
