Shirakawa-go, Gokayama and Inami Wood Carving from Kanazawa
In the village: 2 h
Gokayama lies across the border in Toyama Prefecture, and the bus there from Shirakawa-go is hard to use. These tours put Ainokura or Suganuma on the same day as the village.
The short answer
From Kanazawa, the Machinovate day is the Gokayama tour to book: about 60 minutes with the wood carvers of Inami, about 75 minutes in Ainokura with a washi workshop and about 120 minutes in Shirakawa-go, ending in Kanazawa or Takayama. From Takayama, the same operator adds Suganuma as well, and the Nohi sightseeing bus covers Ainokura and Shirakawa-go plus the Shiroyama viewpoint, without lunch.
Pick the day you want to see the village, or the first and last day you are in Kanazawa, Takayama or Nagoya. We check the booking calendar of each Shirakawa-go tour and list the ones with places left.

Gokayama is the second World Heritage area of gassho farmhouses, made up of the villages of Ainokura and Suganuma. Travellers on forums report that the bus between Gokayama and Shirakawa-go runs rarely and cannot be reserved, which is why most visitors see both on a tour.

The Machinovate day meets at 08:30 at the tourist information centre by the Shinkansen gates in Kanazawa. The first stop is Inami, about 60 minutes among the wood carvers and at Zuisenji temple. Ainokura follows with about 75 minutes and a washi paper workshop, then about 120 minutes in Shirakawa-go. You are back around 18:00 to 18:30, in Kanazawa or, if you choose, in Takayama. From 27 December into early January the workshop does not run, so a New Year visit gets Ainokura without it.
The Takayama version by Machinovate leaves JR Takayama Station at 09:00 in a minivan, with groups of four to ten according to reviewers. It visits Ainokura with a washi session, Suganuma with its museum and a lunch stop, and then Shirakawa-go. The listing gives no minutes per stop and names the viewpoint above Shirakawa-go only where conditions allow. The day ends in Takayama around 17:30 or in Kanazawa around 18:40.
The bus run by Nohi Bus from Takayama is the option without a small group. According to another listing of the same tour it stops about 50 minutes in Ainokura, two hours in Shirakawa-go, 30 minutes at the open-air museum and 20 minutes at the Shiroyama viewpoint. Suganuma is not on the route, and lunch is not included. From December to March the open-air museum is closed on Thursdays.
JPN Adventures drives up to four guests from Kanazawa through Gokayama to Shirakawa-go, where the plan names the Wada, Kanda and Nagase houses and Myozenji temple. The listing does not say which Gokayama village or how long the stops are. A two-star review describes the driver filming with a phone while driving and going too fast; read the recent reviews before you book. Other cars with a driver are on the private tours page.
The Gokayama days are long and run on mountain roads. Snow can slow every bus and van on this route and shorten the stops, and the viewpoint above Shirakawa-go is often out of reach after heavy snow. For winter conditions in the village see the best time to visit.
Three villages in one day leave less time in each. Carol found the guide kept the pace without rushing the group; a traveller from Spain felt hurried all day. If long stays matter more than the number of villages, see Gokayama and Shirakawa-go on separate days.
“Our guide Mohamed generously shared his deep knowledge about the history and cultural context of the villages on our route. He kept our small group at pace without rushing, answered all questions or asked our artisans or craft sellers if he didn't know. …”
“Wonderful day trip from Takayama. 1 hour stop in Ainokura and 3 hour stop in Shirakawa-go. Detailed information given by the guide in Japanese and English.”
“very little time for everything, if I do an excursion it is to enjoy the day, not to feel that I have to run for everything...”
