Luggage transport is included; food, hotel pickup and a guide are not. It is one way only, so it fits a trip that continues from Kyoto into the mountains (Shirakawa-go from Kyoto or Osaka).
Regular express buses link Shirakawa-go with Takayama in about 50 minutes, Kanazawa in about 80 and Toyama in about 90. Nohi Bus marks the services that need a reservation with an “R”, and on busy days they fill up. The Japan Rail Pass does not cover these buses (japan-guide). Fares change from time to time and are set by the bus companies; we do not list them here.
Travellers report that the lockers at the Shirakawa-go bus terminal fill up. On the LIMON bus your bags stay on board; with the day ticket, travel light.
The Tourist Association suggests two to three hours, and the day ticket gives a little more. The village map asks visitors to take their rubbish with them, as there are no bins, and to treat the houses that are not open to visitors as private homes. The Shiroyama viewpoint is reached by shuttle or on foot; how that works in winter is on the Shiroyama page. If you would rather have a guide after all, see the tours from Takayama and from Nagoya.
The tickets on this page are booked in advance. On the scheduled express buses, Nohi Bus marks the services that need a reservation with an R.
No. The pass covers trains, not the express buses into the village.
There are lockers at the bus terminal, but travellers report that they fill up. On the LIMON one-way buses from Kanazawa and from Kyoto your luggage travels with you.
