The view over the farmhouses

Shiroyama viewpoint in Shirakawa-go

The well-known view of Shirakawa-go is from the hill above the village. In winter, getting up there depends on the shuttle and on the snow.

The short answer

The Shiroyama viewpoint is reached by a shuttle bus from the village, which according to the 2026 village map runs from 09:00 until 15:40, or by a footpath that is often closed after heavy snow; the road up is marked as closed in winter. The Nohi sightseeing bus from Takayama, the Smile Tours private charter and the KKT coach from Nagoya have the viewpoint in their itinerary, while the Machinovate Gokayama day and the Rataliya Tours van include it only where conditions allow.

Getting up there

A shuttle bus runs from the village up to the viewpoint. According to the Tourist Association’s village map for 2026 it operates from 09:00, the last ride up leaves at 15:40, and the fare is 300 yen per ride, paid in cash. You can also walk up on a footpath from the village. In winter both depend on the snow: japan-guide notes that the path can be closed during and after heavy snowfall, and the village map marks the road to the observatory as closed in winter. Plan on the shuttle and check on arrival whether it is running.

On a tour or on your own

The Nohi sightseeing bus from Takayama has a stop of about 20 minutes at the viewpoint, according to another listing of the same bus. The Smile Tours charter plans about 20 minutes there as well. The KKT coach from Nagoya carries the observatory in its title and has a variant without it that leaves later. On the Machinovate Gokayama day and the Rataliya Tours van the viewpoint is listed only where conditions allow. On other tours you go up during the free time: a reviewer of the Kanazawa morning tour walked up within the roughly 140 minutes in the village. With the day bus ticket you have about three and a half hours in Shirakawa-go and leave at 14:15, well before the last shuttle; details on the bus tickets page.

Short stays and the viewpoint

On a tour with about 90 minutes in the village, a trip up and back by shuttle takes a large share of the time. If both the view and a walk through the lanes matter to you, pick a tour with two hours or more, or one that includes the stop.

On light-up evenings

During the light-up in January 2027 the observation deck works with allocated time slots. Deck tickets are not sold on their own, and under the official rules travel-agency tours do not receive them. Tripods are not allowed, and snow can limit access. On the event days the way up also closes in the afternoon. The light-up tours and what each says about the deck are on the light-up page.
